Here’s what to look for:
Repeating Patterns (The Biggest Red Flag)
Natural malachite forms through slow mineral growth, creating organic banding, depth and density that cannot be perfectly replicated, so every band is unique.
Fakes often show:
- perfect circles
- bullseye patterns
- symmetrical banding
- identical patterns repeated across the piece
If the pattern looks too perfect, it’s usually not real.
Harsh Black Lines
Natural malachite has deep, dark green transitions - sometimes almost black - but never
jetblack graphic lines.
Fakes often use black to create dramatic contrast between the greens. Real malachite’s
contrast is organic, fluid and mineral true.
Colour That Looks ‘Too Bright’
Authentic malachite carries earthy, rich greens:
- emerald
- forest
- deep bottle green
Fakes often appear:
- neon
- lime
- uniformly saturated
- cartoon-bright
If the green feels fake, trust your instinct – it probably is!
Depth vs. Flatness
Under good lighting, natural malachite has visible depth - the bands appear layered, not
printed.
Resin or polymer fakes look:
- flat
- surface level
- pattern only
Depth is one of the most reliable indicators of authenticity.
Weight & Temperature
Malachite is a copper carbonate mineral - dense, cool, and heavy for its size.
Real malachite:
- feels weighty
- feels cool when first picked up
- warms slowly in your hand
Fakes:
- feel noticeably lighter
- warm almost instantly

Pricing That Makes Sense
High quality malachite is becoming increasingly expensive due to limited supply and strong global demand. If you find large pieces sold at suspiciously low prices, it’s a sign to ask questions.

- Is the green unnaturally bright?
- Does it have depth?
- Does it feel dense and cool?
